However, it became apparent that neither WiFi not Bluetooth were working after the installation.
The Intel Wireless-AC adapter is only supported in kernel 4. The drivers also need firmware which was not available in the package that was installed by default. After these changes both WiFi and Bluetooth were working fine. In general the system seemed to be working fine. In Windows all important functionality seems to be supported fine.
I can play 4k video from YouTube without any issues on Chrome and on Microsoft Edge, but on Firefox there seems to be severe skipping. In addition and unlike with the Apollo Lake NUC at introduction, passthrough audio seemed to work for all audio formats that I tested: Dolby Digital 5. Which brings us to Linux. Unfortunately the latest stable release 8. All I got was an error message about the GPU being unsupported. I talked to a few developers and they basically told me that there are a few developer versions available.
I tried one such developer version and could confirm that all basic functions were working as expected: H. As far as I have understood, changes are needed in Linux kernel, the drivers and in Kodi. This is by no means trivial but I expect things to happen during this year anyhow. I also took power consumption measurements. The slightly uncomfortable truth is that last year you could get a faster NUC for the same money as you can today.
Apollo Lake then? Mainly the GPU. Fair warning! Make an Ubuntu startup media on a USB flash drive. This NUC is not the place for your first Ubuntu rodeo. When it finishes, it'll fail to boot again, since the newly installed Ubuntu doesn't have the nomodeset parameter and will try to activate the ungovernable video hardware. You should end up with a working installation, but you'll notice that you can't change the display parameters, the HDMI sound output may not work, and if you try GLmark2, GLXGears -info, or glxinfo, you'll see that there's no hardware accleration.
In other words, you've just put all of your hopes and dreams into the NUC's graphics card in vain. You are where the person who asked this question was! Ubuntu comes with a frozen kernel. How to Install Linux on Intel NUC
We tried Ubuntu For whatever reason, UNetbootin wouldn't create a functioning live USB key for Fedora—it would boot but fail over to Emergency Mode without trying to install anything. Installing Linux on the NUC should have been the easiest part of the whole process, but for most of our distributions it ended up being a gigantic pain, and that comes down to the NUC's EFI implementation.
The first helpful suggestion I found about the issue came from Tested.Intel NUC Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Install
The Debian distros will usually try to place a bootloader named grubx There are a couple of ways you can try to fix this. The first is to use Ubuntu's boot-repair toolthough it can occasionally be overzealous and inconsistent in its fixes.
The second is to move and rename the files manually. While that is a little more difficult, it has the benefit of being consistent. From our Ubuntu live USB drive, finish the operating system installation but don't reboot. Instead, open a terminal window and type the following:.
These instructions apply to Ubuntu specifically, but they worked the same way for SteamOS and Mint, and they should get the job done for any other Debian distribution that behaves the same way. We've passed all of our findings on to Intel's NUC team, and while we haven't received a response as of publication, we hope that this problem can be fixed with a BIOS update.
There's no word on exactly when we can expect a fix, but one is apparently coming. Once UEFI was working properly and the operating systems were actually booting, Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora didn't give us any more trouble with installation. It worked fine using the custom Debian-based installer, aside from the EFI problems.
One of the draws of the NUC, aside from its small physical footprint, is its small power footprint. The standard desktop Linux distributions are all pretty similar no matter what you're doing, which isn't surprising—there's a fair degree of commonality in drivers across the biggest distributions, after all. Of the four Linux distros, SteamOS is the most interesting. Sitting still on the SteamOS menus consumes almost as much power as actually playing a game.
